How Do You Know When It’s Time for Therapy?

I have noticed a lot of people mistake therapy for something negative or believe that going to therapy means something is wrong with them. There is still a stigma attached to seeking support, but therapy is not only for people in crisis. It can be a space to unload, connect with someone outside of your everyday life, and have an unbiased person hear your feelings and what you're going through. Therapy can be looked at as a form of maintenance. Something that helps us navigate everyday life and better understand ourselves.

So, what are some of the signs that therapy could be right for you right now? They can be as simple as feeling overwhelmed, noticing the same unhealthy patterns repeating in your life, or experiencing anxiety that is beginning to affect your daily life. Sometimes there isn’t a specific sign at all. You may simply feel “off” and aren’t quite sure why.

Therapy can also be beneficial when navigating specific challenges or changes in your life. Relationship difficulties and major life transitions, such as starting a new job, moving, becoming a new parent, experiencing a loss, can bring up new emotions and stressors. Having a space to talk through these situations can help you better understand what you’re feeling and how you want to move forward.

Therapy is also helpful as a preventative measure. It provides a safe space for self-exploration, personal growth, and gaining a better understanding of yourself. Therapy also assists with recognizing patterns, identifying what your needs are, and developing healthier ways to navigate challenges before they become unmanageable or overwhelming. Having a space to take a moment to check in with yourself and reflect on what is happening in your life can be beneficial, even when things are going well.

There is no “right” time to start therapy and no specific level of struggle you have to reach first. Therapy is your space to reflect, grow, and better understand yourself. Sometimes, recognizing that you could benefit from additional support is reason enough to take the first step.
