Group Therapy in Neptune, NJ

A supportive, clinician-led space to work through shared challenges alongside others who understand. Offered at our Neptune City office and, where appropriate, by telehealth.

What group therapy is

Group therapy brings a small number of clients together with a licensed clinician who guides the session. Rather than working through a challenge alone, you work through it in the company of people facing something similar — hearing how they cope, practicing new skills in real time, and finding that your experience is more common than it can feel.

It is a distinct form of care, not a lesser version of individual therapy. For many people the shared setting is exactly what makes progress possible: isolation is often part of what keeps anxiety, depression, and grief in place, and a group works directly against that.

What it can help with

Group work is well suited to challenges that involve connection, patterns of relating, and coping skills, including:

  • Anxiety and social anxiety
  • Depression and persistent low mood
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress, burnout, and difficulty setting boundaries
  • Life transitions such as career change, separation, or becoming a parent
  • Building coping and communication skills

Available groups vary based on client needs and provider availability. If you have a specific focus in mind, mention it when you reach out and we will tell you what is currently running or planned.

What a session is like

Sessions are led by a licensed clinician and follow an agreed structure, so no one is put on the spot. New members are usually invited to listen first and share when they are ready. Ground rules — confidentiality, respect, no advice-giving unless invited — are set at the start and revisited as the group grows.

Before joining, you will meet with a clinician individually to talk about your goals and confirm that a group is a good fit right now. That conversation is also where questions about privacy, format, and scheduling get answered.

Group therapy or individual therapy?

Individual therapy offers depth, privacy, and a pace set entirely by you. Group therapy offers perspective, practice, and connection. Neither is the "advanced" option — they do different work, and many clients combine them, using individual sessions for personal material and group sessions for connection and skill-building.

If you are unsure, a consultation is the simplest way to find out. We will talk through what you are hoping for and recommend a starting point honestly, including telling you if we think another practice or level of care is a better fit.

Common questions

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a licensed clinician leads a small number of clients through structured sessions together. Members work on shared challenges, practice new skills, and learn from one another's perspectives alongside the clinician's guidance.

Is what I say in group therapy confidential?

Your clinician is bound by the same confidentiality and HIPAA obligations that apply to individual therapy. Group members are also asked to agree to keep what is shared inside the group private. Because a group includes other clients, confidentiality depends partly on that shared agreement, and your clinician will review it with you before you join.

Can I do group therapy and individual therapy at the same time?

Yes. Many clients combine the two, using individual sessions for personal work and group sessions for connection and skill practice. Your clinician can help you decide whether one, the other, or both fits your goals.

Our office is at 10 Neptune Blvd Suite 206 in Neptune City, NJ, and we offer both in-person and telehealth care. Available groups vary based on client needs and provider availability, so contact the office to ask what is currently running.
